What Is the Best Waterproof Rating for Tents?
Waterproof ratings can seem like jargon, but they matter a lot when you’re caught in a downpour. That confusing number on a tent’s label – 3000mm, 5000mm, 7000mm – can make the difference between a cosy night under the stars and waking up in a puddle. So, what does it all mean? And what is a good waterproof rating, depending on your camping style?
In this guide, we’ll unpack the details behind tent waterproof rating numbers, how they're measured, and how to choose the right rating for your camping needs. Whether you’re heading to a festival, planning a family escape, or tackling the wild outdoors, knowing your waterproof mm rating will help you make the best buying decision.
At OLPRO, we’re proud to lead the way in tent innovation with high-spec designs and sustainable solutions. Many of our tents feature OLTECH REPRO – a fully recycled waterproof fabric – alongside premium features like sewn-in groundsheets, taped seams, and a standard 5000mm waterproof rating across our range. We combine technical performance with a passion for protecting the environment.
What Is a Tent Waterproof Rating?
The tent waterproof rating tells you how well a tent can resist water. This is measured in millimetres (mm), commonly referred to as the hydrostatic head. If a tent has a 5000mm rating, it means the fabric can withstand a 5-metre column of water pressing down on it before moisture begins to seep through.
How It’s Tested
Waterproof ratings are determined using the Hydrostatic Head (HH) test. In this process, fabric is stretched beneath a sealed tube. Water is gradually added to the tube until droplets start appearing on the underside of the fabric. The height of the water column (in millimetres) before leakage determines the rating.
A Helpful Analogy
Think of your tent like an umbrella. A lower HH rating is like a light umbrella that works for a drizzle, while a higher rating is like a heavy-duty raincoat – great for a torrential downpour. A 2000mm rating might fend off light rain, but a 5000mm+ tent is designed to cope with everything the UK weather can throw at it.
At OLPRO, all our awnings and tents* are built with a minimum waterproof rating of 5000mm, providing peace of mind whether you're heading to a weekend campsite or the Scottish Highlands.
*The OLPRO Hallow 2.0 Dome Tent has a waterproof rating of 3,000mmH/H.
What Is a Good Waterproof Rating for a Tent?
The answer depends on where and how you're camping. Let’s break it down.
For Summer and Festival Camping
If you're heading to a summer festival or a quick camping trip in fair weather, a waterproof rating of 2000–3000mm is typically sufficient. These tents are light, easy to set up, and handle light to moderate rain. The OLPRO Hallow 2.0 Dome Tent is the ideal festival tent as it comes with a 3,000mm H/H rating, is easy to pitch and compact to carry.
For Family Camping in the UK
Planning a family getaway in unpredictable UK weather? You’ll need more reliable waterproofing. Look for tents with a 4000–5000mm waterproof mm rating, plus features like taped seams, sewn-in groundsheets, and large awnings for extra protection.
Our family tent collection offers exactly that. The Wichenford 8.0 Tent and Stafford 6.0 Tent are two standout examples with 5000mm HH, spacious layouts, and smart ventilation systems.

For Wild Camping or Extreme Conditions
If you’re planning a remote adventure or hiking in alpine or coastal areas, you’ll need a tent with a 5000mm+ waterproof rating and high-performance materials. Consider additional factors like wind resistance, tent shape, and rigidity.
OLPRO’s technical pole tents and inflatable tents offer robust protection. The Abberley XL Breeze 4 Berth Tent is a great example – designed for variable terrain and fast setup in poor weather.
More Than Just the Rating – What Else Matters?
A high tent waterproof rating is important, but it’s not the only thing keeping you dry.
Taped Seams and Zips
Look for taped or sealed seams. These prevent water from entering where panels are stitched together – one of the most common places for leaks. Storm flaps over zips add another layer of protection, helping to stop water from seeping in during heavy or wind-driven rain.
OLPRO also offers an advanced waterproofing system called AQUABARRIER™, designed to provide superior protection against rain ingress at high-pressure points such as zips and seams. This unique feature includes reinforced, waterproof zip coverings and an integrated drainage system that channels water away from vulnerable areas. AQUABARRIER™ is available on a select range of OLPRO tents and awnings, so be sure to check the product description before purchasing. You can learn more about AQUABARRIER™ here.
Tent Material Waterproofing and Build
The fabric’s weave and waterproof coating also play a crucial role in overall protection. At OLPRO, we use two proprietary materials across our tent range: OLTECH and OLTECH REPRO. Both are designed to deliver superior tent material waterproofing, while remaining tough, lightweight, and quick-drying – ideal for unpredictable UK weather.
OLTECH REPRO is our most sustainable fabric option. It’s a high-performance canvas made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, helping to reduce landfill waste and cut down on virgin material production. Despite its eco-conscious origin, OLTECH REPRO offers the same 5000mm waterproof rating and durability as traditional materials, proving that sustainability doesn't mean compromise.
This innovative fabric is featured across selected OLPRO tents and awnings – you can read more about OLTECH REPRO and how it’s made here.
Tent Design and Shape
A well-designed tent keeps water from pooling on the roof or running into doorways. Sloped roofs, strong pitch tension, and well-placed vents improve water run-off and reduce condensation.
Browse different types of tents to compare features tailored to your style of camping – whether you prefer traditional poled setups or advanced inflatable designs.
Why OLPRO Tents Keep You Dry
Every OLPRO tent is built to a minimum 5000mm waterproof rating, giving you confidence even in heavy UK rain. But we don’t stop there.
Innovation with OLTECH REPRO
We’re proud to offer sustainable waterproof technology with OLTECH REPRO – a recycled polyester fabric used in our latest range. It delivers high performance while helping reduce environmental impact.
“Our tents are designed with campers in mind – comfort, durability and weather resistance are non-negotiable. OLTECH REPRO is just one of the ways we combine innovation with sustainability.”
